A Chinese envoy to the United Nations on Monday called for enhanced international cooperation in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by the UN summit in September.

The international community should comprehensively implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, strengthen cooperation and strive to achieve win-win results through enhancing the development capacity of all countries, improving the environment for international development, optimizing development partnerships and strengthening development coordination mechanisms, said Wang Min, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN.

Speaking at a General Assembly meeting on Operational Activities for Development, Wang said that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development "has raised a new vision for global development in the next 15 years, and provided new opportunities for international development cooperation in the future."

"The international community should make this a new starting point and embark on an equal, open, comprehensive and innovative path of development in an effort to realize common development of all countries," he said.

Against such a backdrop, the importance and necessity of the UN operational activities for development have become all the more prominent, said Wang, stressing that "a sufficient volume and a rational structure of resources are essential to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)."

"The developed countries should bear the primary responsibility for development financing, effectively honor their ODA (official development assistance) commitments, and increase assistance to developing countries in special situations," he said.

The envoy also pointed out that "in recent years, the environment for development cooperation has undergone changes, but the main actors in such cooperation have remained unchanged. North-South Cooperation is still the mainstream of development cooperation with South-South Cooperation being its supplement rather than substitution."

On China's contributions, he noted that China has been an active participant in international development cooperation, and has provided to the best of its capability assistance to other developing countries within the framework of South-South Cooperation.

"During his attendance at recent summits at the UN, President Xi Jinping of China announced a series of new important initiatives, including launching China-United Nations Peace and Development Fund and South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund," he said.

"The Chinese government will carry out in earnest the above-mentioned initiatives announced by President Xi Jinping, continue to constructively participate in international development cooperation within the framework of South-South Cooperation, support the UN operational activities for development, and work with other member states and the UN to strive for the realization of the SDGs," he said.
