A total of 278 army officers graduated from an Afghan national defense university and were commissioned to the army on Tuesday, a military official said.

"The officers graduated after conclusion of their one-year training at the Marshal Fahim National Defense University and would be commissioned to the Afghan National Army to serve the nation," General Sharif Sharifi, commander of Marshal Fahim National Defense University, told the graduation ceremony.

Nearly 1,000 cadets have been receiving training at Marshal Fahim National Defense University. The latest graduates brought the number of professional officers to 1,078, who have been graduated from the country's top military university since 2012, Sharifi said.

Since Jan. 1 this year, Afghan security forces have assumed the full security charges from NATO and U.S. forces after the NATO-led troops switched from combat to support role. Enditem
