Dengue fever has killed 118 people and infected 381 others in Sudan's Darfur region since September, the health ministry said Monday.

"According to the epidemiological status until last Friday, 381 cases were reported, including 118 deaths," Sudan's State Minister for Health Somia Akad said.

"Dengue fever has declined in Darfur after the measures adopted by the ministry and the efforts made by the medical teams," Health Minister Bahar Idris Abu Garada said.

The fever infection has spread in Darfur region since September, where the Sudanese health authority said it was a seasonal fever known as "dengue," while the World Health Organization (WHO) says it was a hemorrhagic fever.

On Nov. 4, the WHO announced that 103 people died in the Darfur region after they were infected by hemorrhagic fever.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash. Enditem
