Austrian interior minister considering upper limit for asylum seekers

Austrian Minister of the Interior Johanna Mikl-Leitner said Tuesday she is considering implementing an upper limit on the number of asylum seekers her country will accept.

She told reporters that such a limit could come into effect as neither the asylum system nor the Austrian populace should be overwhelmed by the influx of asylum seekers.

She added that the present estimation of 95,000 asylum seekers for the current year is a level that could not be maintained in the coming years.

However, Austria Press Agency reported that Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann said the issue "cannot be solved at the national borders" but should rather be tackled on site in Syria.

Austria's federal and state leaders are planning to hold a meeting on the asylum issue no later than January. Endit
