India's Supreme Court on Wednesday banned the registration of diesel vehicles above 2,000cc in the national capital till March 31 in a move aimed at curbing pollution.

However, the top court said that its order will not affect the common man as small diesel cars will not come under the ambit of its decision.

The court also banned diesel commercial vehicles, registered before 2005, from entering the Indian capital that has been facing its worst-ever toxic smog.

A two-judge bench also directed the traffic police to make alternate routes for trucks that go to other cities through the national capital and double the green tax for those entering the city.

The court's order came in the wake of a bunch of petitions to take immediate steps to curb the alarming levels of pollution in the country. Endit
