Madagascar's ruling party wins senatorial polls

Madagascar's ruling party, Hery Vaovao an'i Madagasikara (HVM), founded by President Hery Rajaonarimampianina, has won 86 percent of the seats in the Dec. 29, 2015 senatorial elections, provisional results released Tuesday by the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) have shown.

Out of the 42 senators elected in Madagascar, 36 are from the president's party while the rest are divided among parties of former president Marc Ravalomanana, former transition president Andry Rajoelina and other independent candidates.

CENI will publish official provisional results on Jan. 9, 30 days before the official announcement of the final results by the Constitutional Court.

Madagascar has a bicameral parliament that is comprised of a National Assembly with 151 members elected through universal direct suffrage and a Senate comprised of 63 members, out of who 42 are elected through universal suffrage and 21 are nominated by the president. Endit
