Some 100 workers were hospitalized on Saturday in a chemical poisoning incident at a sock factory in the central Turkish province of Cankiri, Daily News reported on Sunday.

The workers at the factory, which is in an industrial compound, fainted while working. Some 38 people were transferred to the local hospital while the others were ferried to medical facilities in nearby provinces.

The report said 15 of the hospitalized are in critical condition.

Turkey's emergency management authority said the poisonous chemical was Tetrahydrothiophene, which would cause headaches, nausea if inhaled.

The authorities also noted that the chemical came out from a furniture factory, also in the compound, while the cause of the leakage is unknown at the moment.

The industrial zone has been temporarily shut down and is expected to be opened on Monday. Endit
