The newly-opened electric tramcars will attract more commuters in Yangon, Myanmar, receiving an average of 180 passengers a day, official report said Monday.

The electric train, which operates six times per day, is currently running on a journey of 5.63 km that starts at Wardan Street and runs to Linsadaung in Botahtaung township.

Myanmar Railways under the Ministry of Rail Transportation introduced the tram line over the last week with the aim of easing traffic congestion and provide commuters with convenient public transportation.

The first tram rail service operation was launched after suspension for more than seven decades.

Myanmar's tram rail service dated back to 1904 with a total of 77 electric commuter tram cars running in Yangon before the World War Two, but the services stopped during the war.

The current railroad along the Strand Road serves mainly as a transit route for cargo to transport goods from Yangon's ports. Enditem
