The Turkish forces on Saturday struck areas under the control of the Islamic State (IS) group in northern Syria, leaving unknown losses among the terror-designated militant group, a monitor group reported.

The Turkish shelling targeted several IS positions in the northern countryside of Syria's northern province of Aleppo, amid ongoing intense battles between the terror group and rival rebel groups, backed by Turkey, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Air strikes, believed to be from the U.S.-led anti-terror coalition, targeted the IS positions in the same areas in northern Aleppo, added that the UK-based watchdog group.

Further details about the shelling and the airstrikes are still forthcoming.

Meanwhile, the Observatory said the Syrian government forces backed by the Lebanese Hezbollah group and Russian air strikes continued to advance against several militant groups, including the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front, in the Turkmen Mountain in the northern countryside of the coastal province of Latakia, near Turkey.
