Some 22 Taliban militants have been killed in fierce fighting in the northern Baghlan province over the past 24 hours.

Ahmad Jawed Salim, army spokesman in the province, said Sunday that the battle had been conducted over the control of Dand-e-Ghori district in the province.

"Up to 22 Taliban rebels have been killed and seven others injured in Dand-e-Ghori district over the past 24 hours," Salim told reporters here.

Taliban outfit hasn't commented.

Dand-e-Ghori and Dand-e-Shahabudin districts have been regarded as Taliban hotbeds in Baghlan and adjoining Kunduz and Samangan provinces from where the militants have been organizing their operations.

Afghan government launched a major offensive in mid January to evict militants and restore government control in both Dand-e-Ghori and Dand-e-Shahabudin districts. Endit
