The grassroots members of the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) have voted to support the pact that PSOE leader Pedro Sanchez agreed with the center-right party Citizens for their support in this week's investiture debate.

The vote was held on Saturday and the results, which were published shortly before midnight saw 51.70 percent of PSOE members cast their vote.

A total of 78.97 percent of those who voted gave their support to the agreement that will see Citizens' 40 deputies in Congress add their votes to the PSOE's 90 in an attempt to see Sanchez named prime minister following the debate which begins on Tuesday.

"I am proud of this party. Thank you for your support," wrote Sanchez in a tweet after the result was published.

The pact with Citizens does not assure Sanchez will be elected as prime minister, given that the first vote he needs to win an overall majority in the 350 seat Congress.

Should he fail to do that (and for the moment he can only count on 130 votes), Sanchez would need to win a simple majority in a second vote 48 hours later, but for that to happen, he needs either the left wing, Podemos who have 69 deputies, or the right wing People's Party with 123 to abstain, which at the moment looks unlikely.
