Nigeria committed to success of athletes at 2016 Paralympics: official

Nigeria was working earnestly to ensure that athletes performed well at the forthcoming 2016 Paralympics in Brazil, an official said Monday.

President of the Nigeria Paralympics Committee (NPC) Monday Emoghavwe told reporters in Lagos, the country's commercial city that the committee's target was to ensure that the country surpassed its 2012 Paralympics performance record.

Nigeria won 6 gold, five silver medals and a bronze medal at the Games held in London.

He said para-athletes that had qualified for the Rio Games would be invited to camp to further hone their skills as soon as funds were made available.

"We have set out a target that we are preparing toward to achieve, so for this year 2016, we hope to compete and surpass the record of 2012," Emoghavwe told reporters.

The president appealed to corporate bodies to complement the effort of the government in ensuring that athletes performed creditably through their support.

The Games would hold from Sept. 7 to Sept. 18. Endit
