The European Union has concluded plans to support Nigeria in its bid to rehabilitate and reintegrate captured Boko Haram fighters into the society.

Richard Young, deputy head of EU delegation in Nigeria, on Tuesday said the European regional bloc will support the Nigerian program with more than 100 million U.S. dollars.

"This is the amount that has been allocated. But this covers all the different aspects and support to the country's violent extremism program. So, it goes beyond just the de-radicalization program," he said.

The official said the program was significant because it serves as one of the strategic responses to the Boko Haram insurgency and seeks to respond to the challenge of what to do with the Boko Haram fighters who have been captured.

"The program seeks, in effect, to de-radicalize them to find a pathway for them away from violent extremism, so that they can, in due course have more socially-constructive attitude," he added.

So far, about 800 repentant Boko Haram fighters have been captured by Nigerian troops, according to local officials. Endit
