The Philippines expressed Monday readiness to help Japan after strong earthquakes hit the East Asian country last week.

"The Philippines, within its capability, stands ready to assist Japan and its people," the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a statement.

Manila also extended its "profound sympathies" to Japan for the casualties and damage caused by the recent strong earthquakes in Kumamoto prefecture and surrounding areas.

The Philippines is closely monitoring the situation with the Japanese authorities and the Philippine foreign service posts in the affected region, the DFA said.

At least 42 people were killed and over 1,000 others were injured after a magnitude-6.5 earthquake on Thursday and a magnitude-7.3 quake on Saturday struck southwestern Japan. Endit
