Kelly Slater withdraws from Rio Pro

Eleven-time surfing world champion Kelly Slater has withdrawn from the Rio de Janeiro leg of the World Surf League, organizers said on Monday.

Officials said Slater had cited "personal reasons" for his decision to miss the Rio Pro, which begins at Rio de Janeiro's Guamari beach on Tuesday.

Joel Parkinson and Taj Burrow also announced they would skip the event, just days after competing at the Komune Bali Pro.

Slater blamed pollution in Rio's water for making him sick during last year's Rio Pro.

The 44-year-old will be replaced in this week's event by 20-year-old Brazilian Lucas Silveira. Endit
