Haitian presidential election to involve over 2 dozen candidates

Over two dozen people have registered in Haiti's presidential election scheduled for Oct. 9 and the number can still rise before the deadline for registeration set at midnight Wednesday, Haitian media reported on Wednesday.

The four leading candidates from an earlier aborted election have already signed up.

"This joint effort is a choice for stability and democracy, against corruption and fraudulent election," Jude Celestin, who came second in the previous ballot told reporters.

Jovenel Moise, who came first last time, has also registered to run again.

In February, Haitian legislators elected National Assembly President Jocelerme Privert as the country's provisional president for 120 days.

The country now is officially without a head of state. It missed the deadline for the postponed presidential elections on April 24 after a commission found widespread fraud.
