Eleven African countries are participating in the 2016 Windhoek Lager Africa Jacket amateur golf tournament in Windhoek.

The two-day tournament that is in its third year started Friday with players from Botswana, Namibia, Mauritius, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Seychelles and Swaziland attending.

When it was launched in 2013, there were just five countries - Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

There are about 45 amateur golf players whose eyes are set on the Windhoek Lager trophy that comes together with an Africa Jacket.

The players are selected after competing in four existing country tournaments.

One of Namibia's professional golfers, Trevor Dodds, who is the Windhoek Lager International Pairs Ambassador, praised the players Saturday, saying they were are doing very well.

"It is great that Windhoek Lager is taking the sport to club level. This will promote golf and make the sport grow," Dodds said. Endit
