Toro de la Pena celebrated in Spain amid controversy

Toro de la Pena, a bull festival celebrated in the town of Tordesillas, was celebrated on Tuesday amid controversy involving fights between supporters and detractors of the festival.

Clashes took place in Tordesillas when thousands demonstrated earlier in the morning to show their support for Toro de la Vega festival and refuse to support Toro de la Pena while clashing with animal activists.

Toro de la Pena festival replaces the controversial Toro de la Vega festival wherein a bull is pursued over open country by men before being speared to death.

The regional government of the autonomous community of Castilla and Leon banned the killing of bulls outside a bull ring in May, meaning the bulls cannot be killed at the end of the chase during festivals such as the Toro de la Vega. This is the first time the bull will not be killed in almost 500 years. Endit
