International exercise Tobruq Legacy 2016, which is aimed at harmonizing the coordination of the air defense systems of NATO member states, began in Slovakia on Tuesday.

Tobruq Legacy 2016 is one of the largest military exercises to be held in Slovakia this year and one of the long-term planned activities of the Slovak Armed Forces.

"Such exercises are simply needed, and I consider it important that they are held in Slovakia in such large scope," stressed Slovak Defense Minister Peter Gajdos.

"Apart from the exercise itself, our soldiers will practise transferring military machines, escorting vehicles, but also dealing with logistics," he added.

Some 450 military personnel from the Slovak Armed Forces will be joined by another 1,250 from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia and the United States. Moreover, observers from Germany, Britain, Sweden, Bulgaria, Italy, Norway, Portugal and France are also taking part in the exercise. Tobruq Legacy 2016 ends on Sept. 30. Endit
