Zambia's telecom regulator has asked dealers of Samsung Electronics to notify it of how the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone will be withdrawn from the market after defects were detected worldwide.

Samsung has called for a recall of the smartphone due to a battery problem.

While acknowledging that the smartphone has not yet been officially launched in Zambia, the Zambia Information and Communication Technology (ZICTA) said it was aware that some Zambian consumers may have purchased the device from other markets where the device had been launched.

"Although the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 has not yet been officially launched in Zambia, ZICTA has written officially to Samsung Electronics SA (PTY) LTD Zambia Branch requesting them to come up with interventions and indicate to the Authority how best the device will be withdrawn from the Zambian market," the regulator said in a statement.

The regulator has since urged consumers who may have purchased the smartphone to visit Samsung authorized dealers on how to deal with the defective phones. Endit
