Spain's unemployment rate in the third quarter dropped below 20 percent, hitting a six-year low, according to data unveiled on Thursday by Spain's Statistical Office (INE).

Spain's unemployment rate stood at 18.91 percent in the third quarter of the year, which meant 4,320,800 people were out of work in the country. The figure meant a 5.55 percent fall compared with the figure in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, on a year-on-year basis, the number of people out of work in the country fell by 530,000 and the country's unemployment rate decreased by 2.27 percent.

According to the INE, the number of unemployed women fell by 133,600 to reach 2,191,400 and the number of unemployed men fell by 120,300 to 2,129,400.

Regarding sectors, unemployment fell by 102,100 people in the services sector, by 11,300 people in both the industrial and agricultural sector, and by 4,000 people in the construction sector.

Unions said the fall in unemployment rate was temporary as job opportunities increase during the summer to cope with tourist demands, which increase year-on-year due to instability in other neighboring countries. Endit
