UNITED NATIONS, May 30 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Tuesday that he is deeply concerned by the devastating impact caused by Cyclone Mora on Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Guterres said in a statement that the United Nations "stands ready to scale up its support to the Government-led response efforts in both countries."

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says that the cyclone has brought flooding and landslides to various provinces and affected tens of thousands of people in both countries.

The Sri Lankan government estimates that 194 people have died, 99 people are missing, and more than 80,000 people have been displaced.

With the support of the UN and NGOs, the government is responding to the flooding and providing emergency supplies such as tents and clean water.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Tuesday deployed three assessment teams to four districts hit hardest by devastating floods and mudslides in Sri Lanka, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for Guterres, at a daily news briefing.

The cyclone made landfall in Bangladesh Monday, where some 2.8 million people have been affected and more than 500 shelters have been opened, said Dujarric. Enditem
