ACCRA, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Ghana's Ministry of Health on Friday issued a health alert over a strange disease, which has claimed the lives of eleven people in Liberia.

At least nine others have been infected by the disease.

The ministry said in a statement that efforts were being put in place to increase surveillance at all levels to prevent importation of the strange disease. Both countries are in West Africa.

All victims who died of the disease presented mainly acute symptoms of headache and weakness, diarrhea, vomiting and mental confusion, abdominal pain and fever.

Franklin Asiedu Bekoe, Head of Disease Surveillance at the Ghana Health Service, said Ghana had a system at the airport to detect high temperatures above 38 degree Celsius.

"In-country, we have a structure that has been built from the community level and the regions. I won't say it's foolproof but it is able to detect unusual events," he said.

The WHO said it had sent rapid response teams to the area to assist Liberia health officials with technical and logistical support. Enditem
