TUNIS, July 27 (Xinhua) -- The United Kingdom decided to lift travel restrictions on Tunisia following improving security situation in the country, announced the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday.

The lifting of travel restrictions on Tunisia excludes certain areas including the southern border with Libya and the zone of the extreme center-west, according to the Tunisian State Secretariat for Foreign Affairs, Sabri Bachtabji.

"This decision, aiming to promote Tunisian tourism, is a result of a remarkable improvement in the security situation and also a fruitful cooperation between the two countries," said Bachtabji.

Bachtabji said that UK welcomed the efforts made by Tunisian military and security institutions to secure the various tourist sites across the country.

British tour operator Thomas Cook decided on Thursday to resume flights to Tunisia.

The British Foreign Ministry decided in June 2015 to restrict travel to Tunisia following the carnage on the beach of a hotel in Sousse, the main seaside resort of the country, in which 30 British tourists were killed. Enditem
