LUSAKA, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- The following are news items in Zambia's major media outlets on Saturday.

-- The Zambian government intends to introduce higher taxes on cigarettes and alcohol in next year's budget as part of efforts to promote healthier lifestyles among citizens and to sustain an insurance scheme that will soon be introduced.

Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya said the 2018 national budget would include new revenue streams to finance healthcare such as increased taxes on cigarettes and alcohol. (Times of Zambia)

-- Zambian President Edgar Lungu said it is now time for Africa to solve its own problems instead of always depending on outsiders. (Zambia Daily Mail)

-- Zambia has signed a 175-million-U.S.-dollar project with two Israeli firms to develop farming blocks in the Copperbelt Province.

Minister of Agriculture Dora Siliya said the project whose operations, signed with TAHAL Group International and ZRB Consulting Finance and Development Limited, was expected to start after two years and cover 5,750 hectares of farmland. (Daily Nation)

-- A union representing students from Zambia's public universities has dragged a minister in charge of higher education to court over her decision to suspend union activities at two public universities.

The Zambia National Students Union has petitioned the Constitutional Court over the decision by higher education minister Nkandu Luo to suspend union activities at the University of Zambia and Mulungushi University, saying the move was illegal and unconstitutional. (The Mast) Enditem
