India's top court to deliver verdict on controversial instant divorce

NEW DELHI, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- India's Supreme Court will deliver its verdict on the practice of controversial instant divorce, the Triple Talaq, on Tuesday, officials said.
"The court will today pronounce whether the practice allowing Muslim men to leave their wives immediately by saying "talaq" (divorce) three times should be banned," a lawyer said.
"The court for the first time reviewed whether triple talaq is fundamental to Islam and legally binding."
The practice prevalent among Muslims in India so far is considered legal.
However, the practice came under question and severe criticism after several Muslim women, who have been divorced because of it, appealed to the top court to end the practice.
The verdict is being delivered by a panel of India's five top judges from different major faiths- Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism and Zoroastrianism.
Arguments for the case concluded in May.
