S. African stocks continue upward trend

JOHANNEBURG, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Share prices on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) continued its upward trend reaching new records on Friday.

The all share was up 0.41 percent to 57,231.87 points, while the blue-chip top 40 Index gained 0.44 percent to 51,010.38 points.

The financial index gained 0.29 percent with Standard Bank 0.39 percent higher at R160.12 and FirstRand gaining 0.29 percent to R52.55. Old Mutual gained 0.83 percent to R35.05. Financial services group MMI was up 1.83 percent to R17.82.

The resources sector also benefited from the weak rand, as it receives more in rand for its commodities priced in dollar. The South Africa's rand traded at R13.73 to the dollar. Enditem
