TEHRAN, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Iran's footwear industry experiences a period of prosperity and economic growth, Financial Tribune daily reported on Monday.
Iran has turned into the biggest producer and consumer of footwear in the Middle East, it said.
"An estimated 185 to 210 million pairs of footwear were produced in the country last year," Ali Lashgari, secretary-general of the association and a member of Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, told Financial Tribune.
According to the official, a total of 1,820 licensed industrial units are active in the value chain of leather, bags, shoes, supplies and related industries.
"Latest statistics show Iran exported 32 million dollars worth of footwear during the five months to Aug. 22, up 1.4 pecercent compared to the corresponding period last year," Lashgari said.
The Ministry of Industries, Mining and Trade has projected that the country's footwear exports to reach 125 million U.S. dollars by the Iranian yearend (March 20, 2018), he added.
The country's average export price for each pair of shoes stood at 2.23 U.S. dollars in 2015 and 5.6 U.S. dollars for leather shoes.
Iran's main customers are Iraq, Afghanistan and Azerbaijan. Enditem
