TRIPOLI, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- A team of the Libyan Red Crescent on Tuesday recovered decomposing bodies of IS militants in a school in the city of Sirte dating back to the war between the terrorists and government forces, local media reported.

"The bodies were recovered from the courtyard of a local school after receiving reports from the Joint Security Operations Chamber of Sirte," said Fawzi Al-Fitouri, exhumation officer of the Libyan Red Crescent.

"One of the bodies was found with an explosive belt around it, the kind used by IS fighter," Al-Fitouri added. "We dealt with these bodies with great caution."

"The team is ready to cooperate in recovering the bodies in any area of the city whenever informed."

IS affiliates were defeated and expelled from their former stronghold of Sirte, some 450 km east the capital Tripoli, in December 2015 by forces allied with the UN-backed government.

Officials said that the remaining IS fighters have fled to southern valleys and mountains areas. The terrorists have launched several attacks on army checkpoints and official government headquarters in the country. Enditem
