Brazil's elderly population grows, young blood decreases in 4 years

RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's elderly population reached 29.6 million in 2016, a 16-percent increase from 2012, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) said on Friday.
According to the IBGE's National Household Survey, in contrast to the growth in the elderly population, the proportion of children up to nine years old in the population decreased from 14.1 to 12.9 percent in the same period.
The total population reached 205.5 million in 2016, with 42 percent living in the southeastern region, where Brazil's largest cities like Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are located.
Men accounted for 48.5 percent of the population, while women made up 51.5 percent.
The proportion of Brazilians identifying as brown or black increased over the years. Between 2012 and 2016, the number of the black Brazilians increased by 14.9 percent to 16.8 million, and the number of brown citizens grew by 6.6 percent to 95.9 million.
In this regard, sharp regional differences were detected. The proportion of brown people in the south was 18.7 percent but a whopping 72.3 percent in the north.
According to the IBGE, in 2016, 97.2 percent households had running water, 65.9 percent of housing units had been connected to a sewage collection network or septic tank, and 82.6 percent households were served by a waste collection service.
While not all families enjoyed garbage collection services or basic sanitation, consumer goods like televisions, refrigerators and mobile phones were more commonly seen in households across the country.
The survey found 97.4 percent of housing units had television sets, 98.1 percent had refrigerators and 92.3 percent had at least one mobile phone. Enditem
