SOFIA, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Bulgarian National Assembly, or parliament, ratified a friendship agreement with Macedonia here Thursday, strengthening bilateral ties between the two European neighbors.

The 186 parliament members voted unanimously to support the agreement on friendship, good neighborliness and cooperation between the two countries.

The treaty is a historic breakthrough in the relations between the two nations, and will enable them to coexist peacefully in a united Europe, said Plamen Manushev, deputy chairperson of the Foreign Policy Committee at the National Assembly.

Kristian Vigenin, chairperson of the Committee on European Affairs and Oversight of the European Funds, said the treaty would provide opportunities for the development of bilateral relations.

However, "this does not mean that we should not be careful on how this agreement will be implemented," Vigenin added.

On Monday, the Macedonian parliament ratified the friendship treaty, which was signed by the prime ministers of the two countries last August in Skopje, capital of Macedonia.

According the treaty, Bulgaria and Macedonia will develop comprehensive bilateral relations in line with basic principles of international law and good neighborliness.

The two countries have no, and will have no territorial claims against each other, the agreement said.

What's more, the two countries will create conditions for the development of bilateral trade, as well as promote and protect mutual investment.

Meanwhile, Bulgaria will draw on its experience in helping Macedonia join the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, it said.

The two countries will also contribute to the development of cooperation and the strengthening of stability and peace in Southeast Europe. Enditem
