VIENNA, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Austrian Interior Minister Herbert Kickl has ordered the establishment of a new mobile border protection force to be able to be deployed within a short period of time.

Austria Press Agency confirmed the news with a ministry spokesperson on Thursday, following comments on the plans from Kickl a day earlier.

The new border police are to be made up of about 600 officers from various existing units, including officers already engaged in random checks at borders.

The goal will be to have border control measures including fences and containers set up as quickly as possible, when the need arises. The spokesperson said this should take 48 hours at the latest, but ideally less.

Border crossings will then be able to be controlled, and identities of persons wishing to cross into Austria checked.

Plans for the new border police force should be finalized by the middle of the year. Enditem
