WASHINGTON, April 25 (Xinhua) -- A gunman is at large after shooting a police officer dead, stealing his police car and robbing a gas and convenience store early Wednesday in the northeastern U.S. state of Maine, the authorities said.

Local police are searching for John Williams, the 29-year-old suspect who is believed to be on foot with arms after ditching the police vehicle, according to local media reports.

Williams is accused of killing Somerset County Sheriff's Deputy Eugene Cole, 62, at about 1:45 a.m. in Norridgewock, a town located about 85 miles north of Portland, said the reports.

"Our deepest condolences go out to the family of fallen Deputy Sheriff Corporal Eugene Cole," Maine Governor Paul LePage said in a tweeted statement. "If you live in Somerset County and the surrounding area, please cooperate with law enforcement and stay safe."

The shooting came one day after two police officers were critically wounded by a gunman in Dallas, northern Texas. Enditem
