ARUSHA, Tanzania, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania has dissolved the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) and all regional road safety committees for failing to contain recurrent deadly accidents in the nation, a senior official said on Thursday.

Kangi Lugola, Tanzania's Home Affairs minister, revealed the decision when addressing Defense and Security Committee in south-western Tanzania's region of Mbeya, following a recent road accident which killed 20 people.

Lugola said that after questioning chairman of NRSC and members of regional road safety committees, he concluded that they were not well informed of the road traffic law and its regulations.

"I will reconstitute new bodies with some improvements," the newly appointed minister announced, adding that the current entities had failed in their core mandates.

Lugola also directed Tanzania's Inspector General of Police Simon Sirro to take disciplinary action against regional traffic officers of 10 regions which recorded the highest number of road accidents recently.

He also urged the unqualified drivers and those who drive dangerously to obey the traffic regulations and drive safely on the road.

The action by the minister follows a recent directive by Tanzanian President John Magufuli to rein in traffic accidents that claim lives of innocent Tanzanians every now and then.

Last week, an accident at Mbalizi hill in south-western Tanzania's region of Mbeya, which involved a container truck and three commuter mini-buses, killed 20 people and injured 45 others. Enditem
