TEHRAN, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Intelligence Ministry has stopped activities of 1,000 anti-revolution Telegram channels and summoned their administrators, official IRNA news agency reported on Sunday.
The channels belonged to anti-Iran terrorist groups, monarchists, separatists and emerging sects, said Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi, adding that "we are acting based on national interests and security."
"We also identified tens of thousands of channels with pornographic, child-abusing and terrorist content and blocked them," Alavi said.
On April 18, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stopped using the Telegram messaging application which is popular among the Iranians.
Following that, the Iranian Judiciary issued an order on April 30 completely banning the use of the Telegram.
The ban results from the "harm" Telegram had done to the country's security, culture and economy during the past few years, it said. Enditem
