ARUSHA, Tanzania, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania will soon start the process of classifying hotel and lodges in Dodoma as the quest of shifting to the country's capital gathers pace, a senior official said on Monday.
Gaudence Milanzi, permanent secretary in the east African nation's Ministry of Tourism and Natural Resources, said the move is aimed at ensuring that the facilities offer quality services at a time when government institutions and diplomatic corps are moving to the country's designated capital.
He the exercise will involve town hotels, vacation hotels, lodges, and motels.
According to Milanzi, Tanzania's capital city of Dodoma was experiencing an influx of people, hence the need for upgrading the facilities to cope with the demand.
"There will be a growing demand for hotels and other related services, it is therefore important to have such facilities rated," the official said.
Apart from classifying the hotels, the official also underscored the importance of improving the hospitality industry in the region.
"Just recently we witnessed members of the diplomatic corps receiving their title deeds, and this goes to show the kind of people and visitors we will have in Dodoma," he added.
Hotel ratings are often used to classify hotels according to their quality. The development of the concept of hotel rating and its associated definitions display strong parallels.
With 316 dispensaries, 41 health centers, eight hospitals, 40 hotels and a population of about two million, Dodoma is also expected to host 57 embassies and 30 consulates.
The decision to move the government's headquarters from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma was originally taken by former President Julius Nyerere in 1973.
During that time, the Tanzanian government wanted to move the capital from Dar es Salaam to a more central location to better serve the needs of the people. However, Nyerere's decision wasn't implemented due to financial constraints and economic difficulties. Enditem
