BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 2.07 percent, at 2,723.26 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.32 percent lower at 8,581.18 points. The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 2.63 percent to close at 1,478.51 points.

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Wednesday moved down 19.06 points, or 1.12 percent to close at 1,676.29 points.

Some 14.45 billion shares worth 53.84 billion baht (about 1.62 billion U.S. dollars) changed hands.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended higher here on Wednesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,785.94 up 2.16 points or 0.12 percent, and the Emas was at 12642.46 up 13.69 points or 0.11 percent.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 429.34 points, or 1.55 percent, to 27,323.59 points on Wednesday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 27,249.08 and 27,727.27. Turnover totaled 111.50 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 14.20 billion U.S. dollars).

Ho Chi Minh City, Aug. 15 -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh City bourse in southern Vietnam, closed at 961.37 points on Wednesday, down 16.90 points, or 1.73 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

Over 188.943 million shares worth 4.455 trillion Vietnamese dong (193.7 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange. Prices of 106 stocks rose, 191 stocks decreased, and 68 stocks remained unchanged.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Wednesday on growing concerns over the possibility of Turkey's retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports amid heightening tensions between the two sides.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 151.86 points, or 0.68 percent, from Tuesday to finish the day at 22,204.22.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX-Index, closed at 108.2 points on Wednesday, down 1.77 points or 1.61 percent against the previous trading session.

Nearly 63.9 million shares worth around 904.7 billion Vietnamese dong (39.3 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Wednesday. Specifically, foreign investors bought over 1 billion shares valued at 18.4 billion Vietnamese dong (798,700 U.S. dollars), and sold 1.1 million shares valued at 20.1 billion Vietnamese dong (875,200 U.S. dollars).

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.18 percent higher on Wednesday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index increased by 13.14 points to 7,540.92. The all-share index went up by 16.13 points, or 0.35 percent, to 4,595.05.

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market closed on Wednesday up 0.19 percent compared to the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index increased by 1.67 points to reach 873.40 points after closing.

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market closed higher on Wednesday, with biotech giant CSL leading strong support from the healthcare sector amid the company reporting season.
