BERLIN, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Borussia Dortmund came from behind to beat resilient Greuther Fuerth by courtesy on Marco Reus last minute winner in the first round of the German Cup on Monday.

The "BVB" left it late to avoid an upsetting first-round exit as goals from new arrival Axel Witsel and Marco Reus knocked out second division side Greuther Fuerth.

Lucien Favre's men gained the upper hand from the kick off and dominated the first half. Dortmund came to a number of chances but lacked in accuracy to break the deadlock within the first 45 minutes. Especially goalkeeper Sascha Burchert drove Dortmund players to desperation.

After the interval, Greuther Fuerth piled on the pressure but were unable to pose any threat to Dortmund's defence. Meanwhile, the visitors had to wait until the 60th minute before Christian Pulisic rattled the outside of the post.

The "BVB" increased their efforts but the opener was scored at the other end of the pitch as Sebastian Ernst shocked the visitors after tapping home Daniel Keita-Ruel's cross into the box in the 77th minute.

Dortmund pressed frenetically but the hosts were able to keep the top-flight squad on the distance. Just when the spectators settled for a surprising 1-0 victory, substitute Axel Witsel restored parity after poking home Marco Reus' assist in the dying seconds of the game.

The underdogs remained unimpressed and had a promising opportunity to grab the lead again but Fabian Reese failed to overcome Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Buerki following a one-on-one in the 114th minute.

Clinical Dortmund punished Greuther Fuerth again in the closing period as Marco Reus benefitted on Jadon Sancho's build-up work on the left wing to slot home the 2-1 winner from close range.

"It is a tough loss for Greuther Fuerth. They stage a great performance and gave us a hard fight. However, we are through and that is what counts now. We wasted too many chances," Dortmund head coach Lucien Favre said. Enditem
