FREETOWN, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- The former vice president of Sierra Leone, Victor Bockarie Foh, the former Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, Alhaji Minkailu Mansaray and four others on Wednesday made their first appearance in court for corruption related offences in Freetown.
They are alleged to have embezzled monies meant for Muslims to perform the 2017 Hajj in Mecca. They are charged with 8 counts of corruption and misappropriation of public funds.
The charges include conspiracy to commit corruption offences, engaging in a project without prior planning, misappropriation of public fund, among others.
The Hajj gate corruption took place in 2017 when Muslim pilgrims complained of being duped, overcharged and misled by the committee set up by the government to oversee the process.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) launched a year-long investigation into the allegation and prepared a sealed indictment for those found wanting. The sealed indictment was opened by the new ACC Commissioner, Francis Ben Kaifala who invited the former Vice President and others for questioning. Enditem
