PARIS, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Antoine Griezmann scored a brace to help reigning world champions France rally past Germany 2-1 at home in the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday. In a spotlight duel between two latest World Cup holders, Germany were awarded a penalty in the 14th minute, when Leroy Sane's right flank cross touched French midfielder Presnel Kimpembe's arm.

They went ahead through Toni Kroos' ensuing spot kick. Germany controlled the first half quite well, while the best chance for the hosts arrived in the 40th minute, but the 19-year-old sensation Kylian Mbappe failed to latch onto Griezmann's cross. As both sides sped up after the break, France earned more chances, and they managed to draw level in the 62nd minute.

Griezmann was in the right position to head home the cross from left back Lucas Hernandez, leaving German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer helpless. Neuer's French counterpart Hugo Lloris did well soon afterward to deny Serge Gnabry's powerful shot on the edge of the box in the 67th minute.

Griezmann found his second goal of the match with ten minutes remaining. After Blaise Matuidi was brought down by Mats Hummels inside the box, Griezmann comfortably converted the penalty.

The Atletico Madrid player was replaced in stoppage time by Tanguy Ndombele, who recently earned his first call-up for Les Bleus. With two victories and one draw, France top Group 1 of League A.

They are well on track for next June's title competition featuring four top group finishers in League A. Netherlands and Germany are placed behind with three points and one point respectively. They will go a head-to-head in the final round match on November 19. Enditem
