BUDAPEST, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- The Hungarian government will terminate the jobs of close to 7,000 civil servants as from Jan. 1, 2019, according to a government decree published on Tuesday in the Official Journal.

"In total, 6,810 posts will cease to exist from Jan. 1, 2019," according to the decree.

"A total of 2,600 posts will be terminated directly in the ministries, while the remaining 4,210 posts will be terminated from the different institutions of the government," according to the announcement.

The ministry of innovation and technology will take the biggest hit with 517 posts disappearing, followed by the interior ministry with 401 civil servant job positions are being made redundant.

In the case of the institutions associated with the ministries, institutions controlled by the ministry of human capacities (responsible for education and health care) will lay off 2,250 employees while the institutions supervised by the ministry of finance will work with 954 less people from next year.

The downsizing of people working in the central administration is an old plan for the Hungarian government.

The dismissed workers will be assisted by various methods, including tax breaks and assistance in job searches. According to the latest official figures, unemployment stood at 3.8 percent in Hungary. Enditem
