PORT MORESBY -- The 26th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting wrapped up here on Sunday.

The leaders at the meeting discussed various topics and the APEC economies have continued to make great efforts in making sure the Asia-Pacific region continues to achieve inclusive economic growth and integrate so that all citizens enjoy a better standard of living, said Papua New Guinea (PNG) Prime Minister Peter O'Neill said at a press conference after the meeting. DHAKA -- Bangladesh has tightened New Year's Eve celebrations in capital Dhaka.

NEW DELHI -- The death toll from the cyclone that battered India's southern state of Tamil Nadu coast has reached 33, local government officials said Sunday.

The severe cyclonic storm, Gaja, hit the eastern coast, triggering gusty winds and torrential rains. Gaja made landfall on early Friday between Nagapattinam and Vedaranyam, about 303 km south of Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, uprooting trees and damaging roofs of houses, thereby leaving behind a trail of destruction.(India-Cyclone)

BANGKOK -- Several former Thai cabinet members have joined a brand-new party which plans to launch a large-scale campaign to support Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha as head of post-election government.

Those former cabinet members, who had served varied ministerial portfolios over the last several years, have eventually turned themselves into defectors of their former bosses, namely former prime ministers of Thaksin Shinawatra and Yingluck Shinawatra, both currently in self-exile overseas.(Thailand-Politics)

QALAT, Afghanistan -- Anti-government militants attacked a security checkpoint in Shinkai district of Afghanistan's southern Zabul province on Sunday and took away 10 policemen to an unknown location after a brief fighting, provincial police chief Mohammad Mustafa Mayar said.

"The Taliban rebels attacked a security checkpoint in Shinkai district early on Sunday. After fighting with the police and killing a policeman, they took away 10 others to an unknown location," Mayar confirmed.(Afghanistan-Attack) Enditem
