TUNIS, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian maritime guard arrested 63 people who tried to cross the Mediterranean illegally toward an Italian coast in two separate attempts, said Hossem El-Din El-Jebably, spokesman of Tunisian National Guard on Friday.

Maritime guard intercepted a fishing boat with 48 people aged between 20 and 45, off the coast between the Tunisian cities of Sfax and Mahdia early Friday morning, said Jebably, according to local radio station "Mosaique FM."

On Thursday night, 15 other illegal migrants were arrested, including eight people between the age of 13 and 16, Jebably said. The rescue operation took place off the coast of Zarzis city in southeast Tunisia.

The Italian island of Lampedusa is usually chosen by illegal migrants as it is the closest point to Tunisian coast, only 80 km away. Enditem
