HO CHI MINH CITY, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Vietnams Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday began compulsory garbage sorting at organizations and households which will be fined up to 20 million Vietnamese dong (860 U.S. dollars) if failing to comply with the new rule.

Organic waste, recyclable garbage and all other kinds of waste should be put into three different bags, the municipal Department of Natural Resources and Environment said on Saturday, adding that the use of bags with different colors for different types of garbage, specifically white and blue bags for organic waste, is encouraged.

Every day, Ho Chi Minh City discards over 8,000 tons of garbage, only 15 percent of which are recycled. The city annually spends 4,000 billion Vietnamese dong (173.9 million U.S. dollars) collecting and treating garbage, according to the department. Enditem
