HO CHI MINH CITY, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Vietnams central and southern localities have employed many measures to brace for Typhoon Usagi, which is forecast to make landfall on Sunday morning.
The steering board for disaster prevention, and search and rescue of Ho Chi Minh City has instructed all ferries in the locality to suspend operation as from Saturday evening in anticipation of the typhoon, Vietnam News Agency reported. The municipal Health Department has asked all hospitals in the city to stand ready for any emergency.
As of Saturday morning, about 1,000 offshore fishing boats in the southern province of Tien Giang had been asked to sail out of dangerous areas and keep contact with inland competent agencies.
The central coastal province of Khanh Hoa has evacuated more than 2,840 households with over 12,000 people to safer places, and encouraged 2,210 farmers at aquaculture breeding cages at sea to move inland.
Meanwhile, authorities of the central coastal province of Phu Yen encouraged local residents to move to safe places. Soldiers, policemen and militiamen in the province are working round the clock to cope with the typhoon.
Other localities such as the central province of Binh Thuan and the southern province of Long An provinces have also completed preparations for Usagi, the ninth typhoon to hit the South China Sea so far this year.
In 2017, typhoons claimed the lives of 386 people in Vietnam, damaged more than 600,000 houses and caused economic losses of about 60 trillion Vietnamese dong (2.6 billion U.S. dollars), according to the countrys agriculture ministry. Enditem
