HANOI, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's Hanoi capital and Ho Chi Minh City granted autonomy to public schools to reduce their reliance on the state budget and improve education quality, local media reported on Monday.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has for the first time allowed two high schools to recruit their own teachers this school year, daily newspaper Vietnam News reported.

The department is also working on a proposal to the municipal People's Council to allow high schools to become financially autonomous, with those that meet certain conditions permitted to set their own tuition fees.

Ho Chi Minh City is preparing to extend recruitment autonomy to more high schools in the 2019-2020 school year, Nguoi Lao Dong (Laborer) newspaper reported.

Meanwhile, Hanoi granted financial autonomy to 12 high-quality public schools, including kindergartens and primary, secondary and high schools. They are set to have their infrastructure and operation costs, but yet to receive autonomy in teacher recruitment. Enditem
