RIGA, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Latvian Education Minister Karlis Sadurskis announced resignation on Tuesday and said he would take up a mandate in the European Parliament.

Sadurskis is leaving for Brussels already on Wednesday to join the European Union's legislative body, local media reported.

In the European Parliament, he will take the seat vacated by MEP Artis Pabriks who has been elected to Latvia's new parliament and become one of contenders for the post of prime minister.

Welfare Minister Janis Reirs of Sadurskis' center-right New Unity party will become acting education and science minister in Latvia's outgoing government, which is running the Baltic country in a caretaker capacity while talks on the next government coalition are still in progress.

Commenting on his resignation, Sadurskis said that in this uncertain situation he felt that his duty was to "fulfill the mandate he has been given by the voters" and become a MEP.

In October, Sadurskis ran in Latvia's parliamentary elections but was not elected. Enditem
