MAPUTO, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Mozambique officially joined on Wednesday the "HeForShe" campaign, a United Nations solidarity initiative that aims to mobilize one billion men and boys to accelerate the pace of gender equality around the world.

The formalization of membership was held in Maputo and was presided over by the country's President Filipe Nyusi.

Delivering his keynote address at the occasion, the head of state said Mozambique as a member of UN shares its principles such as unity and equality and the principle of gender equality, and supports its initiatives.

"By engaging men and boys in eliminating inequalities and violence against women and girls, we will be creating a generation that is increasingly aware of the challenges and at the same time, relevant players in combating these evils," Nyusi said.

By adopting the initiative, the country will be preventing men and boys from engaging in premarital marriages, forced marriages and other practices that jeopardize the rights of girls and women.

UNICEF representative in Mozambique Marcoluigi Corsi acknowledged that Mozambique is a country where women enjoy a relatively high level of political participation. However, he added that violence against women and girls continues to occur, a fact that holds back development. Enditem
