HELSINKI, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- The suggestion by the European Commission that the EU area would become carbon neutral by 2050 was met with applause in Finland on Wednesday, even though the Finnish plans to increase the use of wood may now face more obstacles.

Miguel Arias Canete, the EU climate commissioner, told Finnish national broadcaster, Yle in Brussels that she does not want "to start giving advice to Finland".

She said, however, that forests should be actually increased, not decreased. She underlined that she was speaking "at the general level" and not specifically about Finland.

Finland is planning to increase the use of wood by industries to 80 million cubic meters, from the current 73 million.

Despite wide commitment to the overall goals, practical political consensus in Finland is thin on measures that would be enforced.

Finland's Environment Minister Kimmo Tiilikainen leads a multi-partisan parliamentary working group that is to create a climate policy plan that all parties could accept. Enditem
