BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.61 percent, at 2,649.81 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.32 percent lower at 7,928.51 points.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 440.76 points, or 1.62 percent, to 26,819.68 points on Wednesday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 26,745.69 and 26,914.87. Turnover totaled 79.24 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 10.15 billion U.S. dollars).

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) going down 0.37 percent or 11.87 points to close at 3155.92.

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Wednesday moved down 0.29 points, or 0.02 percent to close at 1,672.32 points.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended lower here on Wednesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,688.27 down 6.72 points or 0.40 percent, and the Emas was at 11,653.71 down 48.28 points or 0.41 percent.

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market closed on Wednesday up 0.13 percent compared to the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index increased by 1.05 points to reach 827.43 points after closing.

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market closed lower on Wednesday, as investors across the region took in the overnight rout amid growing uncertainty over global trade concerns.

At the close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 stock index was down 44.7 points or 0.78 percent at 5,668.4, while the broader All Ordinaries index fell 48.4 points or 0.84 percent at 5,749.1.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Wednesday as an overnight rout on Wall Street sparked by a drop in long-term U.S. Treasury yields caused concern about a slowdown in the U.S. economy.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 116.72 points, or 0.53 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 21,919.33.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended lower Wednesday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) lost 13.04 points, or 0.62 percent, to settle at 2,101.31. Trading volume stood at 484.1 million shares worth 4.7 trillion won (4.2 billion U.S. dollars).

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.95 percent lower on Wednesday.
